Normally, the “System Data” category takes up between 12 and 25 GB. When it goes noticeably beyond that range, accumulated caches or stuck system snapshots are usually to blame. Mac disk cleanup often falls short of expectations–not because you’ve done anything incorrectly, but because of the way the APFS file system works. This article explains what you can safely delete, what you should leave alone, and why freed space may not appear immediately.

Table of Contents

Why Your Mac Is Running Out of Storage

Mac System Data: What It Is and Whether You Can Clear It

Method 1: Clearing App Caches

Method 2: Deleting iPhone Backups from Your Mac

Method 3: Manually Clearing Trash and Downloads

Method 4: Removing Apps You Don’t Need

JWizard Cleaner for Regular Maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions About Mac Disk Cleanup

Why Your Mac Is Running Out of Storage

The biggest contributor is usually the expanding “System Data” category. It includes system files, temporary files, and app caches, all of which macOS manages automatically. Finder doesn’t let you delete these items directly; instead, the system decides when they should be cleared.

A second cause is less apparent. You may delete large files or old backups manually, yet APFS can still retain local Time Machine snapshots. Because those snapshots continue to reference deleted data, the corresponding disk blocks may not be released immediately. That’s generally why users report, “I deleted files, but my storage didn’t go up.”

Mac System Data: What It Is and Whether You Can Clear It

“System Data” is more than simple clutter. It combines caches, logs, and temporary files that help macOS run properly. Whenever the system decides that more space is needed, it automatically removes some of these files.

Handling this category manually requires care. Apple recommends managing files through Finder instead of modifying system folders directly. Still, if System Data remains well above 25 GB, investigate what’s causing the increase rather than deleting items indiscriminately.

Don’t try to clean out system directories manually through Terminal. Commands that delete or move system files can damage macOS badly enough that you’ll need to reinstall the system.

Method 1: Clearing App Caches

App caches are made up of intermediate files that help programs launch again more quickly. Since they don’t contain passwords, messages, or documents, removing them won’t affect your personal data.

In Finder, open Applications and use the Trash to delete apps you know you no longer need.

For apps you still use, look for a built-in option to clear the cache, if one is available.

Relaunch the app, then check that it continues to work normally.

Limitation: this only removes the cache belonging to particular programs. System logs and APFS snapshots remain untouched, even though they account for most of the System Data category.

Method 2: Deleting iPhone Backups from Your Mac

Old iPhone and iPad backups can consume dozens of gigabytes on a Mac drive. This is especially common when a device was synced years ago and those backups have never been removed.

Open System Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage.

Open the Backups section.

Choose an outdated or unnecessary backup and delete it.

Keep in mind that deleting a backup cannot be undone. If the device is lost or damaged later, its data can no longer be restored from that backup. Before removing it, verify that anything important is either synced to the cloud or stored somewhere else.

⚠️ Free space may take time to appear after a backup is deleted. APFS snapshot behavior is usually responsible.

Method 3: Manually Clearing Trash and Downloads

Until you empty the Trash, moving a file there does not recover disk space. The file leaves the normal view, but it continues to occupy storage.

In the Downloads folder, sort the files by size so the largest ones are easy to find.

Drag anything unnecessary to the Trash.

Open the Trash and select Empty Trash. The files will then be deleted permanently and cannot be recovered.

The expected amount of space may still not become available after you empty the Trash. Local Time Machine snapshots could be holding it. In most cases, macOS removes those snapshots automatically within 24–25 hours. Terminal can technically be used to force their removal, but doing so interferes directly with the system’s backup mechanisms. We don’t recommend that approach for anyone unfamiliar with its consequences.

Limitation: clearing Downloads and the Trash manually does not remove system caches or logs. A deeper process is covered in our guide on how to clean up a Mac.

Method 4: Removing Apps You Don’t Need

An app that hasn’t been opened for months still occupies space, and its cache and support files may remain on the disk even after the app itself has been moved to the Trash.

Find the app in Finder, then use the file’s info panel to check when it was last used.

Delete it via the Trash. This is the simplest option, although it won’t necessarily remove leftover settings and cache files.

Check for leftover files manually if the standard removal process doesn’t uninstall the app completely.

When many unused apps have accumulated, locating their remaining files one by one can be tedious. A dedicated Mac app uninstaller can handle that task by removing both the app itself and the data associated with it.

JWizard Cleaner for Regular Maintenance

Working through the System Data category manually takes time, and each step requires attention. JWizard Cleaner automates the same tasks described above, so there’s no need to hunt for files by hand.

Deep cleaning of temporary files, caches, and system logs.

Removal of mobile device backups stored on your Mac.

Clearing out the Downloads and Trash folders, with files sorted by size.

One-click RAM optimization if your Mac has started feeling sluggish.

Once you understand APFS snapshots, the main source of distrust around disk cleanup becomes easier to explain: deleting files can seem ineffective even when the system is working normally. The system is simply going through its own block-release cycle, and that process takes time. Manual cleanup is reasonable when you only do it occasionally and are comfortable examining file structures yourself. For regular maintenance, however, keeping a tool available that performs the same steps automatically is simpler.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mac Disk Cleanup

<details>
Can I just delete the “System Data” folder directly?

No. This category doesn’t correspond to one folder that can be erased.
